What it is: A new version, specifically for 'tweens,
of an often hilarious, sometimes poignant game of completely
subjective comparisons. Each player is dealt five Red
Apple cards, each one listing a person, place, thing,
or activity. The dealer/judge (a rotating job) then
turns over a Green Apple card, each of which lists one
adjective. All players then give the judge the Red Apple
card they think best matches the Green Apple card. For
example, which Red Apple card best matches a Green Apple
card that reads “cheerful”: rocking chairs, ghosts,
Superman, baby food, or rainbows?
Why it’s fun: As often as not, none of your Red Apple
cards will make complete sense, in which case you can
play a card strictly for laughs. Remember, the judge
can choose any card regardless of how well it fits,
so if you know the judge’s sense of humor, blatant appeals
to his or her funny bone can pay off big.
Apples to Apples encourages people to
get to know one another’s ideas and feelings. It also
encourages raucous teasing and fun!
