The Bosworth Card Deck |
| |
|
The 64 card Bosworth deck is divided
by color into four 16-card sets. Each player chooses
a color to represent his or her kingdom.
Each 16-card set consists of the
cards shown at the right. Cards move and capture just
like the chess piece sillouhetted behind the characters.
If you know how chess pieces move, you're ready to play!

The Game Board |
| |
|
The game board represents Bosworth
Field, where all of the action takes place. Each player
starts from one of the field camps located along the sides
of the board. The four corner spaces are not used in the
game. |
| The Object of Bosworth |
| |
Your goal is to eliminate
all of your opponents by capturing their king(s). |
| Start by Setting Up the
Game |
| |
1. |
Unfold the game board. |
| |
2. |
Separate cards by color into four
16-card sets. Select a color to represent your kingdom. |
| |
3. |
Choose one of the four field camps
along the sides of the board. The choice of available
field camps depends upon the number of players (see diagrams).
In two and three player games, place cards from an unused
color face down in the unused field camp spaces. These
spaces will not be used in the game. |
| |
4. |
Place one of your pawns face up in
each of your four field camp spaces. |
| |
5. |
Shuffle your 12 remaining cards and
place them face down in a draw pile. |
| |
6. |
Draw four cards for your hand. |
| |
7. |
Pick one player to go first. Play
proceeds clockwise. |
| What You Must Do On Your
Turn |
| |
1. |
Move and/or Capture* |
| |
|
Move one of your cards currently on
the board to an unoccupied space, or a space occupied
by an opponent. When you land on a space occupied by an
opponent, you capture that card. Place all captured cards
face down in a common discard pile. (If you temporarily
have no cards on the board, or if all of your cards are
blocked and you are unable to move, skip to the reinforcement
phase of your turn.) |
| |
2. |
Reinforce |
| |
|
Fill all unoccupied spaces in your
field camp with cards from your hand. You may only fill
unoccupied field camp spaces during your turn, and only
after you have completed the movement and/or capture phase.
When you run out of cards from your hand, unoccupied spaces
in your field camp are filled with face down cards from
the discard pile. Movement is no longer allowed in these
spaces. |
| |
3. |
Recruit |
| |
|
Until your draw pile is depleted,
draw enough cards to bring your hand up to four cards. |
| |

| Movement and Capture Reference |
| |
Basically, cards in Bosworth
move and capture exactly as the chess piece silhouetted
behind the character on the card. |
| |
Movement and capture
rules that vary from chess are in italics. |
| |
General Rules of Movement
and Capture |
| |
|
Definitions of movement - Forward
or Backward: movement directly away from, or toward your
camp Sideways: movement within, or movement parallel to,
your camp Diagonal: movement at an angle away from, or
toward your camp |
| |
|
Except for the knight, a card may
not pass through or jump over an occupied space. |
| |
|
An opponent's card is captured by
landing on its space. The captor now occupies that space,
and the captured card is placed face down in a common
discard pile. |
| |
|
Movement and capture is allowed
in, and between, field camps. |
| |
|
Movement is not allowed in the
four corner spaces of the board, or in any space occupied
by a face down card. |
| |
|
The following rules from chess
do not apply in Bosworth: |
| |
|
Check
En Passant Capture
Castling
Pawn Promotion |
| Capturing Kings |
| |
Kings are captured in
the same manner as the other cards on the board- by landing
on their space (unlike chess, kings are never placed in
"check"). The capture of a player's king results in the
elimination of that player's kingdom. In a 2-player game
this results in victory for the captor. In 3- and 4-player
games: |
| |
1. |
The defeated player's cards are immediately
removed from the board. |
| |
2. |
Unoccupied spaces in the defeated
player's field camp are filled with face down cards from
the discard pile. These spaces will not be used for the
remainder of the game. As soon as other openings develop
in the defeated player's field camp, they must be filled
immediately with face down cards. |
| |
3. |
As a reward, the captor is granted
the queen from the defeated player's kingdom (even if
she had previously been captured by another player). The
queen is placed into the hand of the captor, and re-enters
the game during the reinforcement phase of his or her
turn. (If your field camp spaces are all filled with face
down cards, you may remove one of the cards to make an
opening for the captured queen to re-enter the game.) |
| King |
| |
|
Kings move one space in any direction. |
| |
|
Kings in Bosworth are allowed
to capture cards from their own kingdom. |
| Queen |
| |
|
Queens move forward, backward, sideways,
or diagonally any number of spaces. |
| Bishop |
| |
|
Bishops move diagonally, any number
of spaces. |
| Knight |
| |
|
Knights move in the shape of an "L",
two spaces forward, backward or sideways, followed by
one space at a 90-degree angle in either direction. |
| |
|
Knights are the only cards allowed
to "jump" over other cards to reach their destination. |
| Rook |
| |
|
Rooks move forward, backward, or sideways,
any number of spaces. |
| Pawn Movement |
| |
|
Pawns may move forward one or two
spaces on their first move. |
| |
|
After their first move, pawns move
one space forward or one space sideways,
but only toward an opponent's field camp. |
| |
|
Pawns may not move sideways within
any field camp. |
| |
|
Once a pawn leaves its field camp,
it may never return. |
| Pawn Movement (when capturing) |
| |
|
2 Players: |
| |
|
Pawns capture by moving one diagonal
space toward the opponent's field camp. |
| |
|
3 or 4 Players: |
| |
|
Pawns capture by moving one diagonal
space in any direction. A pawn's capture move may never
end in its own field camp. With 4 players, pawns may capture
an opponent's card on their first move. |
