Games Unplugged
November 2001 (#13)
Fred Jandt
P. 31

BOSWORTH BATTLEFIELD CHESS takes the idea of chess, shrinks the board down so you only start out with four pieces, and adds in the randomness factor of having to draw your remaining pieces from a pile.

Each of the playing pieces in BOSWORTH is a circular tile. You start off with four pawns in your camp. When a space comes open in your camp, you have to put down a new piece and draw another one. Once you pile of pieces is exhausted, that's it-you're left to fend off your opponent with whatever you have left. The first one to take the opponent's king is the winner.

BOSWORTH can be played with two to four people. The two-player game is almost exactly like a normal game of chess. The real fun starts when you add more opponents. You have to worry about not just the opponent in front of you, but also the one to your right and left. Alliances can be formed, and all sorts of mayhem can happen.

BOSWORTH is simple in design and daunting to master. If you don't like chess, it's best that you give this one a pass. But, if you enjoy the strategy of chess or other games like it, you should give BOSWORTH a try. It's a lot of fun.
