What’s in the Box
- 315 CINEPLEXITY® Cards
- Two Director’s
Card Trays
- Quick Play Rules
The Object of CINEPLEXITY
Players earn points
by being the first to name a movie that includes
elements from two CINEPLEXITY cards. The first
player to earn enough points wins CINEPLEXITY!
Setting Up
- Mix all the CINEPLEXITY cards together.
- Fill the two wells in each of the Director’s
Card Trays, placing the cards face down.
- Choose a player to be the first director.
The role of director rotates clockwise to the
next player after each point is won.
- Place
one of the trays in front of the director and
store the other tray in the box.
Playing the
Game
- The director draws one card from either
well in the card tray and reads it aloud. This
card is placed face-up in the center of the
table.
- The director draws a second card,
reads it aloud, and places it face-up, next
to the card already on the table.

When reading the cards, the director may include
the categories along with the movie elements.
Example: “…a
movie with a character wearing a Uniform and
a scene taking place In the Rain.”
- Players race to call out the title of a movie
that includes an element from each of the two
cards. Players may continue to call out titles
of movies until a movie title that satisfies
both cards has
been identified. See Allowable Titles.
“Singin’ in the Rain,” “Saving
Private Ryan,” and “The Notebook” are
examples of acceptable answers. The director
may not call out movie titles.
- When the director
hears an allowable title, he or
she stops play and awards a CINEPLEXITY card
to
the player who called out the title of the
movie. The card awarded is the card which was
first placed on the table of the two cards
in play. If players are unable to identify
an allowable title, a third card is drawn.
See Drawing a Third Card.
- The CINEPLEXITY card awarded to a player represents a point
and is placed, face down, on the table in front
of that player.
- The director passes the card
tray to the player on
the left. This player becomes the new director.
- The new director begins by reading aloud
the card which is already on the table.
- Play continues following steps 2–7
until someone has earned enough points to
win CINEPLEXITY!

Allowable Titles
- Movies that have been
shown in theaters, made for TV movies, and
movies that have gone straight to video, are
all allowable.
- Foreign
films, animations, and documentaries, are all
allowable.
- Television
shows, miniseries, and home movies, are not
allowable.
- The
same movie title may win a point more than
once in a game, but not twice in a row.
- Sequels
may win a point, but not directly after either
the original movie, or another sequel to
the same movie, has won a point.
- The
complete title must be stated.
Example: “Taxi” is not acceptable
for “Taxi Driver.”
- When a CINEPLEXITY card
requires a personal opinion, it’s
the director’s opinion that counts.
Players may want to consider the opinion
of the director because he or she will be
determining if the movie title is acceptable.
Most of the cards in the category CRITIQUES require
a personal opinion.
Director’s Guidelines
- The director
must award the CINEPLEXITY card
to the first player
to call out an allowable title, even if other
allowable titles are called out later.
- A
CINEPLEXITY card may be awarded even if the
director has not seen a particular movie. The
director must believe, or be convinced, that
the movie does include an element from each
of the two cards.
- If a player does not agree with
a decision, he or she may challenge the director
using any movie reference material. The director
may change his
or her decision based on the new information.
When the director makes a final determination,
and moves the card tray to the next player,
the decision is final.
Drawing a Third Card
Players may be unable to
identify the title of a movie that includes an
element from each of the two cards. After giving
players a reasonable amount of time, the director
draws a third card. The two cards that are on
the table are read aloud followed by the third
card. The third card is then placed, face-up,
on the table. Players race to name the title
of a movie that includes elements from any two
of the three cards. If a player is successful,
the director awards that player one of the two
cards originally placed on the table, and discards
the other. The third card remains on the table
for the next turn. Play continues from Playing
the Game, step 6.
If players are unable to identify
a movie after the third card is added, the director
discards all three cards and starts over with
Playing the Game, step 1.
