Getting Started

  • 150 Letterflip® Cards
    Gold side: Standard Game
    Blue side: Advanced Game
  • 2 Divider Cards
  • 2 Letterflippers
  • Card Tray
  • Quick Play Rules

First Time You Play
Place a deck of LETTERFLIP Cards in each side of the card tray. The cards should lie on their sides with the numbers on the top and the gold side facing the word "Discard" on the tray. Place one Divider Card in front of each deck of LETTERFLIP Cards so that it covers the first card on the discard side of the tray. The Divider Card will separate the played cards from the unplayed cards.

The Object of LETTERFLIP
In LETTERFLIP, each player tries to be the first to identify all four words on his or her LETTERFLIP Card. Using the process of elimination, each player determines which letters are included in a word. Once some, or all, of the letters are determined, the player tries to figure out the word. The first player to identify all four of his or her words wins LETTERFLIP!

Setting Up
1. Each player takes a Letterflipper and flips up all the Letters and the Letter Counter. All gold tabs should be down so that no stars or numbers are visible.
2. Each player draws a LETTERFLIP Card from the "Draw" side of either card deck. Without revealing the card to the opponent, each player places it in the card slot on the right side of his or her Letterflipper—gold side up. The three-letter word should be visible through the window on top of the Letterflipper base. Each player will be attempting to identify the words on the card in his or her opponent's Letterfipper.
3. Each player raises the gold Letter Count Tab so that the number three is visible. This indicates that each player is attempting to identify a three-letter word.
4. Players determine who will take the first turn.
Playing the Game
  Overview
Each player begins the game by attempting to identify the three-letter word on the card concealed in the opponent's Letterflipper. Through the process of elimination, players determine letters that are part of the concealed word. After a player reveals several letters, he or she may take a chance and guess the word. When a player has identified the three-letter word, that player moves on to identify the four-letter word. This process continues until one player has successfully identified the three-, four-, five- and six-letter words on his or her concealed card.
  A Player's Turn
A player may do one, and only one, of the following on his or her turn:
    A. Guess a letter.
    B. Guess a word.
    C. Guess the location of a letter in a word. (Only allowed after determining all of the letters in that word.)
If the player guesses correctly, he or she immediately takes another turn. The player continues taking turns as long as he or she guesses correctly. If the player guesses incorrectly, the turn moves to the other player. Players continue taking turns until one player has correctly identified all four of the words on his or her concealed LETTERFLIP Card.

  A. Guess a Letter
Player A names a letter. Player B states whether that letter is, or is not, part of Player A's word.

  • If the letter IS part of Player A's word, Player B must say how many times that letter occurs in the word. Player A raises the gold Letter Tracking Tab on top of that letter so that the number of stars exposed indicates the number of times that letter occurs in the concealed word. Player A now takes another turn.
  • If the letter IS NOT part of Player A's word, Player A indicates that the letter is eliminated by flipping the letter down. The turn moves to Player B.

  B. Guess a Word
After Player A knows several letters in the word, he or she might want to use a turn to guess the word. A player may guess the word instead of a letter during any turn. Player B indicates whether that word is, or is not, the correct word.

  • If the word IS correct, Player A, who correctly guessed the word, resets his or her Letterflipper so all the letters are flipped up and the gold Tracking Tabs are down on each letter. Player A also raises the tab on the Letter Counter so that the next number is visible. This indicates the number of letters in the word Player A will attempt to identify next.
Player B slides the LETTERFLIP Card down so that the next word is visible. Player A now takes another turn and begins naming letters for the new word.
On his or her turn, Player B continues working on the word he or she is currently attempting to identify. A player may only move on to a new word after correctly guessing his or her current word.
  • If the word IS NOT correct, the turn moves to Player B.

  C. Guess the Location of a Letter
If Player A has correctly identified all of the letters in his or her word, and is still unable to determine the word, he or she may use a turn to guess the specific location of a letter in that word.

  • If the the location of the letter IS correct, Player A now takes another turn.
  • If the location of the letter IS NOT correct, the turn moves to Player B.
For example, Player A determines that N, A, W, G, and O are the five letters in the word but cannot think of any word that might be formed using these letters. He or she incorrectly guesses that G is the first letter in the word. Since this is incorrect, the turn moves to Player B. When it is Player A's next turn, he or she correctly guesses that W is the first letter of the word. Since this is correct, Player A gets another turn. He or she correctly guesses WAGON and moves on to the six-letter word.

Winning the Game
The first player to correctly identify all four of the words on his or her LETTERFLIP Card wins LETTERFLIP!

Want to Play Again?
Return the played cards to the "discard" side of either card deck and draw new cards.
When a Divider Card is at the back of a deck, the deck should be shuffled and replaced in the card tray with the Divider Card in front.
