We got to drag the new OTB game to the table. This
one is actually pretty cool, as it adds a new angle
to trivia games that I've not seen before:
Arguing.
It is based on a public radio game show. The core mechanic
is that the questions are so difficult that it is nearly
impossible to know the correct answer. The questions
are, however, multiple choice. You can usually rule
out one of the answers, and will occasionally actually
know the answer.
What happens in a round is that there are two contestants,
and every one else is audience. The audience first all
choose their answers, then reveal them faceup. Then the
entire group discusses what should be the correct answer.
The contestants then get to openly choose their answers.
Anyone who gets it correct gets a point. If both contestants
came to a consensus AND were right, they get a bonus
point.
Anyone in the audience who manages to get both contestants
to agree with their answer, gets a bonus point--whether
or not the answer was right or wrong. They get a point
for being persuasive.
The cool thing comes from the discussions themselves.
The discussion of just how long an engine could run
without oil or water took on a new life with our group
of techies. Incantations of Thermodynamics were even
invoked.
Moo,
Frank
